Loading last week. Wild to have a wood kiln in the town. It’s such a juxtaposition of concepts. The lagoon, nature, uraban life, graffiti, the unfortunate unhoused, the industrial neighborhood, just blocks from lake Merritt’s wealth combined with the displacement and gentrification of families who have not able to keep up with the Bay Area cost of living. Add the layer of community, diversity and love oaklanders have for this city it is such a trip.
We completed the 2nd firing! I learned a lot about this kiln, she’s a fussy one that likes to go at her own pace. She’s very different than what I have been accustom too. Which is annoying and somewhat enjoyable bc of the struggle. The crew was amazing and can not wait to fire again! We unload next week and will be loading here in a few weeks for the 3rd firing.

I am teaching a wood firing class that’s a non credit course and we’re loading next week. The class is more of a workshop environment that’s 12 weeks and we will fire the train kiln twice, weeks 6 and week 11.
If you’re interested learning about wood firing registration will open soon for the next class after the new year. The mission is to build community, create access to wood firing especially for folks who do not have the financial means. Travel, lodging, food, etc are unfortunately all things that are necessary when taking a wood firing workshop. By no means is this a perfect solution but it is a form that makes it at least within reach. Any student attending at any educational institution will receive discounted registration rates.
